Union Berlin has officially appointed Steffen Baumgart as their new head coach following the dismissal of Bo Svensson. The decision comes after a disappointing start to the Bundesliga season, where the team has failed to secure a win in their last nine matches. Svensson's tenure ended following a series of subpar performances, leaving Union Berlin languishing in 12th place.

Baumgart, a former player at the club, scored 22 goals during his two seasons at Union from 2002 to 2004. His appointment marks a homecoming as he takes over the coaching responsibilities from AP News, with his first training session scheduled for January 2, 2024.

Before returning to Union, Baumgart managed FC Köln and Hamburger SV. He expressed excitement about rejoining the club, stating, "I'm very much looking forward to returning to the Bundesliga and to Union." Baumgart plans to work intensively with the players as they prepare for their upcoming matches, starting with a trip to face Heidenheim on January 11, 2024. His experience and prior success at the club have generated optimism among fans, who are eager to see a turnaround in the team's fortunes.
