LOS ANGELES — In the wake of raging wildfires across Los Angeles County, law enforcement officials have reported the arrest of at least 20 individuals on suspicion of looting. These arrests took place in evacuated zones where residents have been forced to leave their homes.
L.A. Supervisor Kathryn Barger condemned the alleged looters during a recent news conference, stating, “I promise you, you will be held accountable. Shame on those who are preying on our residents during this time of crisis.” She emphasized that the Sheriff's Department will continue to patrol these areas to prevent further criminal activity.
Sheriff Robert Luna echoed these sentiments, clarifying that remaining in evacuated areas during an emergency is a misdemeanor, which could escalate to felonies for more serious offenses. “I'm gonna make this crystal clear: over last night and this morning, we are up to 20 individuals who chose to go into our area and deprive these poor people of their property,” Luna stated.
The situation has escalated as wildfires remain a significant threat, with at least five fatalities reported and over 6,000 structures damaged. Approximately 130,000 residents are currently under evacuation orders, as firefighters battle the Palisades fire — which has consumed more than 17,200 acres — and the Eaton fire affecting areas in Pasadena and Altadena, where an additional 10,600 acres have burned.
L.A. County District Attorney Nathan Hochman has assured the public that looters will face serious legal consequences, stating, “If you want to commit burglary or grand theft, you will be arrested, prosecuted, and punished to the fullest extent of the law.”
