The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has unveiled its annual list of the "best catches" in airport security for 2024, highlighting some of the most unusual attempts by travelers to smuggle prohibited items through checkpoints. This year’s list presents a range of bizarre and sometimes alarming finds, which underscore the challenges faced by travel security personnel.
The TSA reported a steady increase in individuals attempting to bring firearms onto planes, with a historical total of 6,737 firearms detected in 2023. As noted in the CBS News report, the top discovery was a gun found in the seat pocket of a stroller, with a baby present in the stroller at William P. Hobby Airport in Houston, Texas. This alarming discovery raises questions about passenger awareness of serious violations of airport security.
Among the other notable discoveries, a creative attempt included a vape pen hidden inside a tube of toothpaste at Chicago Midway International Airport, and methamphetamine concealed within crutches at Portsmouth International Airport in New Hampshire. Notable entries also included two live snakes hidden in a man’s pants at Miami International Airport, and a replica improvised explosive device at El Paso International Airport [as reported by The Hill].
The TSA's findings emphasize that travelers should be aware of what constitutes prohibited items, with potential penalties reaching up to $14,950 per violation. As the agency continues to enhance its security measures, it remains focused on identifying and intercepting illegal items, making air travel safer for all.
