Elon Musk, chosen by President-elect Donald Trump to lead a government cost-cutting initiative, has acknowledged the ambitious nature of his goal to reduce US federal spending by $2 trillion from a current budget of $6.8 trillion. Musk, during a discussion with political strategist Mark Penn, noted, "I think if we try for $2 trillion, we've got a good shot at getting $1," highlighting that the $2 trillion figure represents a "best-case outcome" in budget cuts.
As the head of the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk and fellow leader Vivek Ramaswamy are focused on enhancing government efficiency through significant spending reductions. However, this undertaking faces substantial hurdles, considering two-thirds of federal expenditures are allocated to programs that Trump has either pledged not to alter or cannot feasibly cut. This includes essential programs such as Social Security, Medicare, and veterans' benefits, in addition to servicing the country’s mounting $36 trillion debt.
In response to these challenges, Trump is meeting with congressional Republicans to strategize his legislative platform, which includes discussions on tax reductions and immigration controls. However, consensus among lawmakers remains elusive at this stage. For more detailed coverage, visit Reuters and South China Morning Post.
