Venâncio Mondlane, the opposition leader in Mozambique, has returned from self-imposed exile, stating he is ready for government discussions.
He claimed that the October elections were stolen, with his party, Podemos, asserting they won.
Protests since the election have resulted in over 280 deaths due to actions by security forces.
Mondlane emphasized his intent to defend himself against allegations tied to protest violence and labeled the situation a “silent genocide” of his supporters.
The newly elected president, Daniel Chapo, from the ruling party Frelimo, is set to take office on January 15.
