Venâncio Mondlane has returned to Mozambique from exile, claiming he was the true winner of last year’s presidential election, which he alleges was rigged.
His arrival in Maputo was met with heavy security and a large crowd of supporters, amidst ongoing tensions and protests following the contested election.
Mondlane stated that he aims to be closer to the protest movement, which has seen violence resulting in dozens of deaths since the October elections.
He emphasized his willingness to negotiate regarding the election disputes and condemned violence against his supporters, asserting that he will continue to fight for justice.
The political situation remains precarious, with ongoing protests and clashes resulting in significant casualties, as security forces tighten control ahead of the new president's swearing-in.
