The small, tight-knit Altadena community in northeast Los Angeles is grappling with the devastating impact of the ongoing Eaton Fire, which has consumed more than 10,000 acres and shows no signs of containment as of Wednesday afternoon. Among the countless losses, the renowned Christmas Tree Lane, celebrated for its long-standing tree lighting ceremony established 140 years ago, now stands in ruins. This site, known as the oldest large-scale holiday lighting in the United States, was reportedly engulfed in flames on Wednesday, affecting both locals and tourists who cherished its extravagant decorations featuring thousands of illuminated bulbs hanging from towering cedar trees.

As the fire continues its rampage, local businesses are bearing the brunt of the devastation. Notable casualties include Side Pie, an Altadena pizzeria that was reduced to a mere frame, as seen in an Instagram post by the owner. Other establishments like homestyle Thai restaurant Miya, the classic diner Fox’s, fast-food restaurant Everest, and the local favorite, Rancho Bar, have also been lost. The historic Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center was also destroyed overnight.

Further up the hill, Altadena Hardware, a grocery establishment since 1916, has been gutted, while the quirky Bunny Museum, famous for its extensive collection of over 45,000 bunny-themed objects, has also met its end, although its animal residents were reportedly saved.

Local shop owner Leah Ferrazzani, who operates Ferrazzani’s Pasta & Market, expressed her concern as her business finds itself within the evacuation area. “I was dodging palm fronds and didn’t feel comfortable asking people to drive to work,” she reflected. She noted the emotional toll of witnessing the destruction faced by fellow business owners in the community, stating, “How do I hold space for a community that has just been destroyed?”

Despite the grim circumstances, there are signs of resilience. Prime Pizza has managed to remain standing, and Altadena Beverage and Market shared their survival on Instagram. Monique King, co-owner of Fox’s, conveyed hope for the future, saying, “If the universe is with us, it is our intention to rebuild. We absolutely intend to.”

As the local community mourns the substantial losses and unearths paths to recovery, Side Pie owner Kevin Hockin summarized the sentiments shared among residents with a touching message: “We love you Altadena. Hug someone in need of a hug.”
