The Panama Canal Authority chief has categorically dismissed President-elect Donald Trump’s assertions regarding Chinese control over the canal and criticized his comments about shipping fees. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Ricaurte Vásquez Morales emphasized that China does not exert any influence over the operations of the canal, labeling Trump’s statements as “unfounded.” He remarked, “We cannot discriminate for the Chinese, or the Americans, or anyone else,” highlighting the importance of adhering to neutrality treaties and international law.
Trump has repeatedly suggested that the U.S. should reclaim control of the canal, alleging that American vessels are charged “exorbitant prices” for passage and that China is dominating the trade route. However, Vásquez Morales refuted these claims, stating that Panama has not sought any $3 billion in repairs and operates under established guidelines that ensure equal treatment for all nations. He stated, “This will lead to chaos” if such ideas were implemented, reaffirming that U.S. Navy vessels are granted priority passage through the waterway.
Panamanian officials, including President José Raúl Mulino and Foreign Minister Javier Martinez-Acha, have consistently protected the nation’s sovereignty over the canal. Mulino emphasized that “every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjoining zone is Panama’s and will remain so,” reinforcing the country’s firm stance that the canal belongs to Panamanians and will not be subjected to foreign demands (Daily Beast).
As the canal remains a vital artery for global trade, the dialogue between U.S. leadership and Panamanian authorities is critical in maintaining diplomatic relations and ensuring operational stability.
