In a security incident that has raised alarm, U.S. Capitol Police arrested a man attempting to enter the Capitol Visitor Center with a machete and three additional knives on Wednesday afternoon. The arrest took place as visitors were arriving to pay their respects to former President Jimmy Carter, who is lying in state, and just hours before President-elect Donald Trump was scheduled to visit for a meeting with Senate Republicans.

The man was stopped around 2:00 p.m. EST during a routine security screening when officers spotted the machete in his bag via an X-ray machine. Following this, security screening was briefly halted as the police assessed the situation. The thwarted individual faces multiple charges for carrying a dangerous weapon as highlighted by the Capitol Police. This arrest follows an increase in security measures in light of Carter's visitation and the upcoming inauguration of Trump on January 20, 2025.

Capitol Police stated, “During security screening, our officers spotted a machete in the man’s bag, stopped the X-ray machine, arrested the man, and secured the machete,” confirming that multiple knives were also found in his possession. According to a report by AP News, the incident did not result in any injuries.
