The US has accused the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of committing genocide and has imposed sanctions on their leader, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that Dagalo's actions involve systematic atrocities during the 20-month conflict, including murder and sexual violence targeting ethnic groups.
In retaliation, RSF representatives have criticized the US for double standards and accused it of failing to manage the Sudanese crisis effectively.
The ongoing conflict has created a dire humanitarian situation, with estimates of up to 150,000 deaths and famine declared in several regions.
The sanctions prevent Hemedti and his family from entering the US, as well as freezing assets and targeting RSF companies linked to arms procurement.
