Former Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) has officially announced her candidacy for the position of mayor in Oakland. In a video shared on social media, Lee emphasized her commitment to unifying the city to tackle pressing issues such as homelessness, crime, and the high cost of living.

Lee, who served in Congress for over 25 years, stated, “They’ve said we are a city divided, but let’s show them we are one Oakland. That’s in our DNA” (The Hill). She will be running in the special election on April 15 to fill the remainder of the term of former Mayor Sheng Thao, who was recently recalled amid dissatisfaction with her handling of crime and public safety.

In her announcement, Lee expressed her readiness to “restore Oakland as a beacon for innovators, artists, builders, and entrepreneurs,” pledging to improve public safety and support local businesses. Her campaign comes on the heels of significant challenges faced by the city, including a $130 million budget deficit and rising crime rates, which have plagued Oakland in recent years (Los Angeles Times).

Lee’s broad appeal is enhanced by her extensive political background and endorsements from several former Oakland mayors.
