UK Athletics and its former head of sport, Keith Davies, are facing serious charges of manslaughter related to the tragic death of Paralympian Abdullah Hayayei. Hayayei, who was preparing for the World Para Athletes Championships, died at the age of 36 after a metal throwing cage fell on him while training at Newham Leisure Centre in London on July 11, 2017.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced charges of corporate manslaughter and a violation of the Health and Safety at Work Act against UK Athletics. Meanwhile, Davies, aged 77, has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter along with a similar health and safety offence. Both parties are set to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on January 31.
At the time of the incident, Hayayei, a prominent UAE athlete, was reportedly training in three events: discus, javelin, and shot put. He had previously made his Paralympic debut at the Rio 2016 games, finishing sixth and seventh in javelin and shot put, respectively. His unexpected death led to a moment of silence held in his honor during the opening ceremony of the championships in London.
UK Athletics has declined to comment ahead of the upcoming legal proceedings. For further details, visit the BBC.
