A search operation in Italy's Dolomites for two missing British hikers, Aziz Ziriat and Sam Harris, has led to the discovery of a body, heightening concerns over their well-being. The men, aged 36 and 35 respectively, went missing on New Year’s Day after failing to return from a hike in the Trentino region. Their alarm was raised when they did not board their flight home on January 6th.
The unidentified body was found buried under snow at an altitude of approximately 2,600 meters near the Conca Pass area in the Adamello Nature Park. Italy's National Alpine Cliff and Cave Rescue Corps reported that they have begun assessing the dynamics of the accident, while the search for the second hiker continues. This discovery follows the earlier finding of two rucksacks and additional gear on Wednesday, signaling that the search may soon yield further results.
Rebecca Dimmock, Ziriat's girlfriend, shared that the pair were experienced hikers well-prepared for their trip, noting, “They wanted to do a New Year's hike…off-grid”. A friend of Ziriat, Joe Stone, emphasized their experience, stating, “>Alarm bells were raised when they didn’t turn up for their flight.”
As the search continues amid challenging weather, the local community's response has been praised, with calls for anyone familiar with the area to assist in the effort. Crystal Palace’s charity, Palace for Life, has joined the appeal for information regarding the hikers’ whereabouts.
