Winter Storm Watches and Warnings Issued as Significant Impacts are Expected Across Southern U.S.

Credited from: NEWSWEEK

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued winter storm watches for ten southern states, warning that significant winter impacts are expected this week. Forecasts indicate heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain could affect large areas, particularly in the Mid-South, exacerbating travel disruptions and posing health risks to vulnerable populations, including infants and senior citizens (Newsweek).

States currently under storm watch include Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia. Areas most at risk encompass parts of northeast Texas, southeast Oklahoma, and most of Arkansas, with projections of up to 8 inches of snow in portions of Tennessee and significant accumulations expected throughout the affected regions (Newsweek).

Snow is particularly likely to cause hazardous driving conditions, especially between Thursday and Friday. The NWS has advised residents to prepare for travel carefully and to consider delaying unnecessary travel during the storm. Meteorologist Chikage Windler emphasized that the potential for serious winter weather impacts is increasing, especially for regions like northeast Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas (Newsweek).

The NWS has assessed that there is a high chance (50-80 percent) of at least moderate winter impacts affecting major areas from the Red River of the South to the Tennessee Valley. Forecasts will continue to be adjusted as conditions evolve leading up to the weekend.

Residents are advised to stay informed via updates from the NWS and follow safety guidance throughout the duration of the storm.
