BOSTON - In a startling incident at Logan International Airport, a male passenger aboard JetBlue Flight 161 opened an emergency exit door and deployed the slide while the aircraft was taxiing on Tuesday evening. The flight, which was preparing to head to San Juan, Puerto Rico, faced a significant delay due to the disturbance.
The situation unfolded around 7:30 p.m. local time when the unnamed passenger, reportedly eager to exit the aircraft, opened the overwing exit "suddenly and without warning," according to a statement from Massachusetts State Police. Other passengers quickly intervened, restraining the individual until authorities arrived.
Following the incident, the passenger was arrested and is set to face charges, with an arraignment scheduled for Wednesday morning at East Boston District Court. A spokesperson from JetBlue confirmed that no injuries occurred during the incident, which significantly delayed the flight’s departure, leaving the airport nearly four hours later than planned.
This incident coincides with other recent concerns regarding airline safety, highlighted by the grim discovery of two deceased individuals found in the wheel well of a JetBlue aircraft in Florida earlier this week. Authorities emphasized that this event was isolated, and there was no ongoing threat to public safety (USA Today).
