A former nurse at Henrico Doctors' Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, has been charged with malicious wounding and felony child abuse following an investigation into multiple cases of newborns suffering "unexplained fractures" in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman, 26, is being accused of intentionally injuring an infant during her employment at the facility.

The charges stem from an incident that reportedly took place on November 10, 2024. According to legal documents, Strotman has been charged with one count of felony child neglect, which carries a potential prison sentence of up to 10 years, alongside one count of malicious wounding, which could lead to a maximum of 20 years in prison (source: ABC News). Her arraignment occurred on the following Friday, and her next court appearance is scheduled for March 24, 2025, with a strict injunction against contacting any minors under 18 years old.

So far, the investigation has identified seven potential victims, including four infants from 2023 and three from 2024. Henrico Commonwealth Attorney Shannon Taylor confirmed the ongoing nature of the inquiry, emphasizing that the documented number of victims may rise as further details are uncovered. “Encouragement has been granted to families who believe their babies might have been harmed to come forward,” she stated.

The investigation gained traction following reports of unexplained injuries to multiple babies within the NICU, prompting an internal review by the hospital. Consequently, law enforcement opened a broader inquiry after several cases from the past years emerged, marking a significant turning point in the investigation on December 31 (source: USA Today). According to police, a comprehensive analysis of “hundreds of hours of footage” was undertaken, with officials currently investigating the circumstances surrounding these infant injuries.

In a statement regarding the situation, Henrico Doctors' Hospital expressed their shock and sadness, reaffirming their commitment to patient care: “We have been assisting law enforcement in their ongoing investigation and will continue to do so. We are heartbroken for the families affected by this troubling situation and are enhancing our safety measures in the NICU, including the installation of new security systems.” As of now, the facility has temporarily ceased accepting new admissions to their NICU as a precautionary measure (source: ABC News).

The case has stirred community sentiments, drawing attention to the protection of vulnerable infants within medical facilities. Police Chief Eric D. English appealed for patience among the public as authorities delve deeper into the investigation, highlighting the sensitive nature of such injuries associated with the youngest patients.

In light of these developments, Erin Strotman remains in custody without bond, with the potential of facing substantial imprisonments if convicted. The proceedings will continue to unfold, with families urged to stay vigilant as the investigation progresses. Implementations are likely to arise as this case garners further public scrutiny and media coverage.
